SUMMARY:Abiding Mindfully in the Body: Meditation and Yoga Retreat (2023)
DESCRIPTION:With Tatiana Castellanos (yoga). \nThe Buddha said\, “There is one thing that\, when cultivated and regularly practiced\, leads to deep spiritual intention\, to peace\, to mindfulness and clear comprehension\, to vision and knowledge\, to a happy life here and now\, and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening. And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centered on the body.” The first mindfulness practices that the Buddha taught were attending to the body— coming to our senses. Mindfulness of the body is an invitation to open to the awareness which is already present in the body. The retreat practices and teachings will support continuity of mindfulness in the body throughout all activities. A wholesome sense of being calm\, grounded\, embodied and present will be nourished. \nYoga practice will be an integral part of this silent meditation retreat as a form of meditation in motion – there will be two or three sessions of yoga each day.

SUMMARY:Finding our Ground in Generosity\, Love and Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:We are all intricately connected with all human and non-human beings\, our planet Earth and the cosmos. Generosity and other ethical practices bring us into alignment with this truth. Love is the warmth of deeply caring in these relationships. Wisdom sees the empty nature of it all with the heart wide open. Please join us in meditation\, reflection and other supportive practices as we explore these perspectives on the Dharma. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Simple\, Profound and Liberating: Discovering the Essence of Dharma
DESCRIPTION:Vast numbers of wonderful books and discourses have been written and spoken about Buddhist teachings\, yet the essence of the practice is profoundly simple and miraculously liberating. When we wholeheartedly open to the unfolding of life as it is\, not turning away\, distracting ourselves or imposing our beliefs on how things should be\, we experience the fullness of life living through us. Within the silence and warmth of the practice community\, with the guidance of the teacher\, we will meditate together and contemplate the Buddha’s core teachings. An atmosphere of ease\, acceptance\, joy and the presence of nature will support us. \nThis retreat is recommended for people with a foundation of meditation practice and a previous insight retreat. \n  \n\nRegistrations open during Fall 2019. SUMMARY:Relating to Ourselves and Others with the Heart of a Buddha
DESCRIPTION:When we go on retreat and dive into silence and inner awareness we have the opportunity to recognize and release the habits of mind that limit our freedom and peace. Possibly the most challenging and important arena into which we bring our practice of mindfulness is relationships. While we may want to respond to our intimate relations\, colleagues\, friends and neighbors with authenticity and an open heart\, relationships are often the context in which old reactive patterns are triggered. \nIn this retreat Daryl Lynn Ross and Jean Esther will explore how to be intimate with ourselves\, and authentic and compassionate in how we relate with others. The retreat schedule will include sessions of mindful speaking and interaction as well as times of silence\, all engaged in with a spirit of kindness. Sitting and walking meditation\, teachings\, mindful movement and discussions about practice will round out the retreat schedule. This retreat is open to all\, and is not specifically designed for couples. Couples and individuals of all sexual and gender orientations are welcome. Please note: we ask that couples not share a room together. \n  \nCo-Teacher: Jean Esther \nJean Esther MSW began training in meditation in 1975. Since 1982\, she has trained in the Buddhist Theradavan tradition with renowned senior lay teachers as well as Burmese and Western Monastics. She has engaged in intensive teacher training in both Vipassana practice and non-dual awareness. Her teaching is informed by over 35 years of practice as a psychotherapist integrating spiritual inquiry\, psychological understanding and body awareness rooted in the ancient teachings of love and wisdom. Jean teaches at Insight Meditation Society in Barre\, MA\, Insight Meditation Center of Pioneer Valley in Western Ma\, IBME teen retreats as well as various locations across the US and Canada. \n  \n\n\nRegistrations open during Fall 2019.
\n  \n  \nRegistration information \nARRIVAL TIME: 3:30-5:30 pm\, Thursday\, April 11. SUMMARY:Abiding Mindfully in the Body: Meditation and Yoga Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha said\, “There is one thing that\, when cultivated and regularly practiced\, leads to deep spiritual intention\, to peace\, to mindfulness and clear comprehension\, to vision and knowledge\, to a happy life here and now\, and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening. \n  \nWith David Schouela (yoga) \nDavid Schouela has been practicing meditation and yoga since 1996 and has been teaching yoga since 2001. David brings to his teaching the integration of Buddhist mindfulness and insight meditation with classical yoga practice. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRegistration Information \nARRIVAL TIME: 3:30-5:30 pm\, Wednesday\, November 14. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Moral Intelligence and Integrity: An Afternoon of Meditation\, Teaching & Community
DESCRIPTION:Buddhist moral teachings are not a list of do’s and don’ts that we are supposed to follow. They are guidelines and practices that develop inner discernment to help us live with integrity and kindness. At the heart of the matter is a commitment to minimize the harm we cause in the world and to support life. Morality\, along with wisdom and meditation is an essential element of the Buddhist Path. To have integrity in our thoughts\, speech and actions supports the love\, insight and peace that develop in our meditation practice. \nThe day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk with time for questions and discussion\,in a friendly atmosphere. SUMMARY:The Four Noble Truths: Undoing the Causes of Our Suffering
DESCRIPTION:The Four Noble Truths are the core of the Buddha’s teaching. They are a plan of action to release the stress\, anxiety\, and tension in the mind\, heart\, and body. The teachings approach this in a non-conventional way. We are not trying to change anything\, but are learning to be with life as it unfolds. We use the calm\, peace and well-being that come from meditation as a springboard for greater insight into our life and our true nature. Insight is the doorway to wisdom and kindness\, and through practicing the Buddha’s path to freedom we find transformation happening in our lives\, our relationships and our work\, extending in widening circles. \nThis silent retreat will combine meditation instruction\, guided meditation and explorations of how we relate to difficulties in our lives. \n  \nCo-Teacher: Steven Hick \nAt the peak of his career\, former social work professor and founder of War Child Canada\, Steven Hick dove into the Dharma full-time in 2005. He has since founded the Ottawa Insight Meditation Community and now teaches insight meditation with an emphasis on reducing the stress in our daily life. He is Director of MBSR Ottawa where he established MBSR teacher training in Manitoba\, Newfoundland and Alberta. Steven is the author of numerous books including Mindfulness and Social Work and Mindfulness and the Therapeutic Relationship. He holds a PhD in social work\, and is a father and activist. Steven has been practicing meditation and yoga since 1979 with a variety of teachers\, including Matthew Flickstein\, Adyashanti\, Bhagavan Shanmukha and Thich Nhat Hanh. \n  \n  \nRegistration Information \nARRIVAL TIME: 3:30-5:30 pm\, Wednesday\, October 24. As drivenness diminishes\, we come home to who we truly are and can be open and intimately present in the unfolding of life. This retreat will explore within our own experience how insight and wisdom free us to love wholeheartedly\, and how love liberates us from the painful delusion that we are isolated and separate. \nThis retreat is recommended for people with a foundation of meditation practice\, and a previous insight retreat. \nThere will be optional Feldenkrais (Awareness Through Movement) sessions offered by Janet Maxwell. \n  \nRegistration Information \nARRIVAL TIME: 3:30-5:30 pm\, Wednesday\, July 18. SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Social Engagement: An Afternoon Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness practice wakes us up to recognize the ways that we create suffering for ourselves and others. We come to see the pain and oppression in the world around us with more clarity and compassion as well. How can we respond to social concerns in ways that don’t pour more fuel on the flames? Do simple acts of kindness really makes a difference? Are there ways that we can engage with the issues of society that affirm the wisdom of inderdependence – that we’re all in this together – rather than perpetuating relationships of power and privilege? We will reflect on Buddhist teachings on social ethics and see what responses to these and other questions ring true for us. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunities for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. The teachings will be given in English; questions and comments in French as well as English are welcome. Space is limited! This event will be limited to 32 participants. \nRegistration Information \nCost: Sliding scale: $30 (students\, unemployed\, retired) – $40 (regular rate) – $50 (supporter rate). SUMMARY:Meditating With Death as Our Teacher: An Afternoon Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Death is all around us\, inextricably woven through life. You might have lost someone close to you\, or had a brush with death through illness or an accident. Or maybe death has always seemed kind of distant. Looking with clear and fearless eyes at the truth of death is not something just for those who are aging; no one knows how\, when or with whom we will die. We only know that we will. Investigating the reality of death is not a sad or morbid topic; when we look deeply into death we live more fully\, authentically\, fearlessly and compassionately. In our society we turn away from death – we deny it and hide it from sight. In this afternoon retreat we will open our minds and hearts to what death has to teach us. \nThe day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunities for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. SUMMARY:Abiding Mindfully in the Body: Meditation and Yoga Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Co-teacher: David Schouela (yoga) \nCome home to your body and rest mindfully. Mindfulness of the body is an invitation to open to the awareness which is already present in the body. The first mindfulness practices that the Buddha taught were attending to the body— coming back to our senses. Yoga practice will be an integral part of this silent meditation retreat as a form of meditation in motion – there will be two or three sessions of yoga each day. Mindfulness of the body provides the ground for inquiry into the habits of mind that lead to suffering\, in order to realize greater freedom and happiness. The Buddha said\, “There is one thing that\, when cultivated and regularly practiced\, leads to deep spiritual intention\, to peace\, to mindfulness and clear comprehension\, to vision and knowledge\, to a happy life here and now\, and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening.  And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centered on the body.” \nDavid Schouela has been practicing meditation and yoga since 1996 and has been teaching yoga since 2001. David brings to his teaching the integration of Buddhist mindfulness and insight meditation with classical yoga practice. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Meditation for Calmness\, Clarity and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Having a restless\, unsettled mind is pretty common\, perhaps especially these days when there is so much distraction from social media. Insight (vipassana) meditation can give us skills to collect and calm the mind\, which helps us feel greater stability and well-being. Clarity comes when we don’t get so pulled into habits of thinking\, moods and emotions that come up\, because our minds are more calm. And we connect with a natural sense of compassion for ourselves and the world around us as we come to know our own minds with kindness and honesty. These qualities of calmness\, clarity and compassion are key developments in insight meditation practice\, and we will explore them with teachings and experiential practices during the daylong retreat. \nThe day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunities for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. Space is limited! This event will be limited to 35 participants. \nRegistration Information \nCost: Sliding scale: $25 (students\, unemployed\, retired) – $40 (regular fee) – $50 (supporter fee). TNI is dedicated to offering affordable rates to all. Our sliding scale fees allow retreatants to pay according to their financial means. Please contact us if you need to request a further reduction in rate. Free-will donations (dana) to Daryl to support her teaching practice will be invited at the end of the day. \nRegistrations can only be done through this website. It is not possible to register through Concordia website. \nWhat to bring: Cushions are provided for sitting on the floor and chairs are also available. If you prefer to sit on a meditation bench\, please bring your own. Wear comfortable clothing. There will be a 45 minute break for lunch\, and we encourage you to bring something simple which does not need to be heated. Tea will be provided. Please arrive at 9:45 am to check in so we can begin at 10:00 \nCancellation fee: You may cancel and receive a reimbursement of your registration fee minus $5 up to 48 hours before the event begins.
