SUMMARY:The Power of True Kindness: A Daylong Mindfulness Retreat

Kindness expresses an attitude of connection with life; the word “kind” has the same root as “kin” or family. When we are truely kind we deeply listen – to ourselves\, to others\, to life. In this daylong retreat we will explore how we can cultivate and find our home in true kindness\, in our moment-by-moment living of our daily lives. \nThe retreat day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunity for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. Space is limited! This event will be limited to 25 participants. \nRegistration Information \nCost: Sliding scale: $40 (students\, unemployed\, retired) – $50 (regular fee) – $60 (supporter fee). TNI is dedicated to offering affordable rates to all. Our sliding scale fees allow retreatants to pay according to their financial means. Please contact us if you need to request a further reduction in rate. Free-will donations (dana) to Daryl to support her teaching practice will be invited at the end of the day. \nRegistrations can only be done through this link. It is not possible to register through The Yoga Connection Studio website. \nWhat to bring: Cushions and blankets are provided for sitting on the floor and chairs are also available. If you prefer to sit on a bench\, please bring your own. Wear comfortable clothing. There will be a 45 minute break for lunch\, and we encourage you to bring something simple which does not need to be heated. Tea will be provided. SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Social Engagement: An Afternoon Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness practice wakes us up to recognize the ways that we create suffering for ourselves and others. We come to see the pain and oppression in the world around us with more clarity and compassion as well. How can we respond to social concerns in ways that don’t pour more fuel on the flames? Do simple acts of kindness really makes a difference? Are there ways that we can engage with the issues of society that affirm the wisdom of inderdependence – that we’re all in this together – rather than perpetuating relationships of power and privilege? We will reflect on Buddhist teachings on social ethics and see what responses to these and other questions ring true for us. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunities for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. The teachings will be given in English; questions and comments in French as well as English are welcome. Space is limited! This event will be limited to 32 participants. \nRegistration Information \nCost: Sliding scale: $30 (students\, unemployed\, retired) – $40 (regular rate) – $50 (supporter rate). SUMMARY:Meditating With Death as Our Teacher: An Afternoon Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Death is all around us\, inextricably woven through life. You might have lost someone close to you\, or had a brush with death through illness or an accident. Or maybe death has always seemed kind of distant. Looking with clear and fearless eyes at the truth of death is not something just for those who are aging; no one knows how\, when or with whom we will die. We only know that we will. Investigating the reality of death is not a sad or morbid topic; when we look deeply into death we live more fully\, authentically\, fearlessly and compassionately. In our society we turn away from death – we deny it and hide it from sight. In this afternoon retreat we will open our minds and hearts to what death has to teach us. \nThe day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunities for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. The teachings will be given in English; questions and comments in French as well as English are welcome. Space is limited! SUMMARY:Abiding Mindfully in the Body: Meditation and Yoga Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Co-teacher: David Schouela (yoga) \nCome home to your body and rest mindfully. Mindfulness of the body is an invitation to open to the awareness which is already present in the body. The first mindfulness practices that the Buddha taught were attending to the body— coming back to our senses. Yoga practice will be an integral part of this silent meditation retreat as a form of meditation in motion – there will be two or three sessions of yoga each day. Mindfulness of the body provides the ground for inquiry into the habits of mind that lead to suffering\, in order to realize greater freedom and happiness. The Buddha said\, “There is one thing that\, when cultivated and regularly practiced\, leads to deep spiritual intention\, to peace\, to mindfulness and clear comprehension\, to vision and knowledge\, to a happy life here and now\, and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening.  And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centered on the body.” \nDavid Schouela has been practicing meditation and yoga since 1996 and has been teaching yoga since 2001. David brings to his teaching the integration of Buddhist mindfulness and insight meditation with classical yoga practice. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Meditation for Calmness\, Clarity and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Having a restless\, unsettled mind is pretty common\, perhaps especially these days when there is so much distraction from social media. Insight (vipassana) meditation can give us skills to collect and calm the mind\, which helps us feel greater stability and well-being. Clarity comes when we don’t get so pulled into habits of thinking\, moods and emotions that come up\, because our minds are more calm. And we connect with a natural sense of compassion for ourselves and the world around us as we come to know our own minds with kindness and honesty. These qualities of calmness\, clarity and compassion are key developments in insight meditation practice\, and we will explore them with teachings and experiential practices during the daylong retreat. \nThe day will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunities for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. Space is limited! This event will be limited to 35 participants. \nRegistration Information \nCost: Sliding scale: $25 (students\, unemployed\, retired) – $40 (regular fee) – $50 (supporter fee). TNI is dedicated to offering affordable rates to all. Our sliding scale fees allow retreatants to pay according to their financial means. Please contact us if you need to request a further reduction in rate. Free-will donations (dana) to Daryl to support her teaching practice will be invited at the end of the day. \nRegistrations can only be done through this website. It is not possible to register through Concordia website. \nWhat to bring: Cushions are provided for sitting on the floor and chairs are also available. SUMMARY:*CANCELLED* Mindfulness: Remembering to be Present and Kind
DESCRIPTION:This silent retreat will introduce Buddhist teachings on mindfulness clearly and practically. A warm and compassionate approach\, guided meditations\, pointers on sitting posture and opportunities to ask questions will make this an accessible retreat.  Giving oneself and others the “gift of silence” i.e. not speaking except during meetings with the teacher and times for Q&A\, enables retreatants to enter into their inner experience and allows the mind to become more settled. Participants will be offered guidance to bring mindfulness into daily life to meet our relationships\, work and responsibilities with awareness and an open heart. \nThis retreat welcomes beginners and those with some experience. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Waking Up in Our Lives: Living Meditation (an afternoon retreat)
DESCRIPTION:Doing meditation practice in a quiet room by ourselves or with others gives us a way to ground ourselves\, find some inner space and learn to not get so hooked by our habitual reactions. Another important dimension of practice is living with mindfulness and compassion in everyday relationships and activities. \nAs meditation deepens it becomes a way of life: we bring more calm and kindness into our relationships and activities\, and the challenging people and moments can be opportunities to see where we are still stuck in old habits. We recognize that everyone and every situation can teach us to become more aware and compassionate. Life itself becomes our practice. \nThe afternoon retreat will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices and a talk and discussion\, with opportunity for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. The teachings will be given in English; questions and comments in French are welcome. Space is limited! This event will be limited to 32 participants. \nRegistration Information: \nCost: Sliding scale: $30 (students\, unemployed\, retired) – $40 (regular fee) – $50 (supporter fee). TNI is dedicated to offering affordable rates to all. Our sliding scale fees allow retreatants to pay according to their financial means. Please contact us if you need to request a further reduction in rate. Free-will donations (dana) to Daryl and to True North Insight will be invited at the end of the day. \nWhat to bring: Cushions and blankets are provided for sitting on the floor and chairs are also available at the studio. If you prefer to sit on a bench\, please bring your own. Wear comfortable clothing. There will be a 15 minute tea break\, and you are welcome to bring a light snack. \nCancellation: You may cancel and receive a reimbursement of your registration payment minus a $5 administrative fee up to 48 hours before the event begins. After that there is no reimbursement\, but you can transfer your ticket if someone you know will take your place. Please inform us as soon as possible if you need to cancel. \nContact us at darylyn@truenorthinsight.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:The Heart of the Buddha’s Teachings
DESCRIPTION:Anatta\, or non-self\, is the jewel at the heart of the Buddha’s teachings. It is not a cold and nihilistic teaching as some imagine; rather it points to the heart-mind that is boundless\, compassionate and intimately connected with life. The Buddha began his lifetime of teaching by giving attention to the reality of human suffering and the potential for liberation. The elaborate self-identities we construct are in actuality the root of suffering. Within the support of the retreat framework\, we will move into more ease and presence within body\, heart and mind\, and will meditatively inquire into the ways we define ourselves and our experience\, in order to see through and live beyond these ego identities. The way of liberation pointed out by the Buddha is open and available to us. \nFor retreatants with at least one prior vipassana retreat. \nThere will be an optional Feldenkrais movement session (Awareness Through Movement) taught by Janet Maxwell. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:The Dharma of Relationships
DESCRIPTION:  \nCo-teacher: Jean Esther  \nPossibly the most challenging and important part of life into which we bring our practice of mindfulness is the arena of relationships. Our intimate relations\, colleagues at work\, friends and even neighbors call us to be present in the moment and respond with authenticity and heart. Yet relationships are often the very context in which reactive patterns are triggered\, and we bring to these encounters the pain of old baggage. In this retreat Daryl Lynn Ross and Jean Esther will explore how to be intimate with ourselves\, and authentic and compassionate in how we relate with others. The retreat schedule will include sessions of mindful speaking as well as times of silence\, all engaged in with a spirit of kindness. Sitting and walking meditation\, teachings\, and discussions about practice will round out the retreat schedule. Although this retreat is not designed specifically for couples\, people may choose to come as partners – straight\, gay\, queer all welcome – although room sharing as couples will not be allowed. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER \nJean Esther\, MSW began training in meditation in 1975. Since 1982\, she has trained in the Buddhist Theradavan  tradition  with renowned senior lay teachers as well as Burmese and Western Monastics.  She has engaged in intensive teacher training in both Vipassana practice and non-dual awareness. Her teaching is informed by over 35 years of practice as a psychotherapist integrating spiritual inquiry\, psychological understanding and body awareness rooted in the ancient teachings of love and wisdom. Jean teaches at Insight Meditation Society in Barre\, MA\, Insight Meditation Center of Pioneer Valley in Western Ma\, IBME teen retreats as well as various locations across the US and Canada. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Finding Our Way Through Loss and Grief to Peace - An Afternoon Retreat

SUMMARY:Acceptance\, Love and Compassion in Meditation: A Daylong Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation is a practice of attention and awareness that brings a kind\, non-judging and compassionate presence to our inner experience\, our relationships and the way we engage with the world. It is not a cold and demanding gaze\, driving us towards perfectionism; rather it is learning to accept and attend to whatever our experience may be. By staying open and present we come to realize its impermanent nature. We may feel grief\, wanting\, fear or anger but we do not need to be overwhelmed and consumed by them. It is not who we are; we are the space of awareness within which it is known and received. \nThe afternoon retreat will include meditation instruction\, sitting and walking meditation\, guided practices of loving-kindness and compassion\, discussion and opportunity for questions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. \nEveryone is welcome: beginners and more experienced practitioners. Space is limited! This event will be limited to 22 participants. \nRegistration Information \nCost: Sliding scale: $45 (students\, unemployed\, retired) – $60 (regular fee) – $75 (supporter fee). It is not possible to register through The Yoga Connection Studio website. \nWhat to bring: Cushions and blankets are provided for sitting on the floor and chairs are also available. If you prefer to sit on a bench\, please bring your own. Wear comfortable clothing. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch\, and we encourage you to bring something simple which does not need to be heated. Tea will be provided. Please arrive at 10:45 am. \nCancellation fee: You may cancel and receive a reimbursement of your registration fee up to 48 hours before the event begins. SUMMARY:Presence with Body: Discovering Stability\, Ease and Freedom – Meditation and Yoga Retreat
DESCRIPTION:  \nCo-teacher: David Schouela (yoga) \nThe first mindfulness practices that the Buddha taught were being attentive to our experience in the body—coming to our senses. In this meditation retreat\, yoga practice (guided by David Schouela) will be an integral part of the retreat\, and will be a form of meditation in motion. There will be two or three sessions of yoga each day. \nThis retreat will be an opportunity to calm and steady the heart/mind to provide the necessary conditions for liberating insight. Being present in mindfulness of the body provides the grounding for deeper inquiry into the habits of mind that lead to suffering\, so that these habits no longer drive us. \nThere will be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your practice with Daryl in small group meetings\, and individually\, by request. \n  \nDavid Schouela has been practicing meditation and yoga since 1996 and has been teaching yoga since 2001. David brings to his teaching the integration of Buddhist mindfulness and insight meditation with classical yoga practice. \n  \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER\n
